Send a Parcel to Amsterdam, Netherlands

Send a Parcel to Amsterdam, Netherlands

Amsterdam is a great city on the west coast of Europe and the capital city of the Netherlands. Its name is very simple, basically the dam on the river Amstel. The present city has a population close to 2.5 million and it is expending. It has been voted the second best city to live in Europe.

The first settlements recorded were in 1275 when the locals built a dam and a bridge over the river Amstel and were exempted from paying tolls by Count Floris V. The city developed around the lowlands of the area and much of the land was reclaimed from the water either for agriculture or for peat. Amsterdam became the richest city in the world in its best days of the 17th century when its boats travelled the world creating trade and finding colonies to build on.

The Dutch East India and The Dutch West India companies were very rich and Amsterdam became the centre of diamonds and much of the overseas trade. It was occupied in World War 11 and lost a major portion of its Jewish community.

Later in the century there was a great deal of demolition (with some grumbles) but the city today has some lovely old parts by the canal with a great area of modern buildings and many great museums and galleries. It is home to large multinationals like Phillips and ING and many others have major offices there. It is still the diamond capital of Europe.

The parcel trade is on one of the shortest Continental routes of all and the city has a great airport hub in Schiphol with a continual flight linkage to the UK, this makes parcel deliveries quick, efficient and very cheap, next day delivery is no problem. There is a very strong trade between companies in London and Amsterdam, which has been built up over the years.
