Send a Parcel to Lisbon, Portugal

Lisbon is one of the oldest cities in Western Europe predating places like London, Paris and Rome by 100 years. It grew up in its central position on the Iberian Peninsula at the mouth of the Targus River and has always been a major trading port. Even today it is the second largest port on the western Atlantic Coast with massive containers distribution.

Lisbon was run by the Romans until around 420 AD and was then taken over by Muslim conquerors including the Berbers and Moors. In 1147 Afonso Henriques and the Crusaders recaptured to city and from that date it became a major powerhouse of Europe. The Portuguese were major explorers and Vasco do Gama set off from Lisbon, Portuguese settlers went to many parts of the world and Portuguese is a major world language and the hub was always Lisbon.

Today Lisbon is still a great city with the old town going down to the river and with 2 major bridge crossings, the latest the Vasco de Gama Bridge is the longest in Europe at 10.7 miles is the longest in Europe. The economy is based about the port but it is also the financial capital of Portugal with a good Stock Exchange and banking sector, it has a massive media business and is the base for many Portuguese Company headquarters.

Lisbon has a very large tourist industry with people visiting the capital and also the Atlantic Coast nearby. There are many great buildings, theatres and museums worth visiting.

Portugal has had a torrid time with its financial problems and its sovereign debt is being tackled with the help of the EU and IMF. The parcel industry to Lisbon however is still thriving and with a good air links to the UK travel times are quick and prices are good. The EU free trade generally allow customs to be easily dealt with although paperwork must be correct. Sometimes bureaucracy can delay things a little so send early.
