Back to news... 11 May 2011 The Anticipated Effect Of The Olympics on Parcel Deliveries
At the end of July for four weeks in 2012 the Olympic Games will come to Britain and this will then be followed by the Paralympic Games. In both of the Games the main events are being held in London and its surrounds but there will be some outside events at Football Stadiums around the country and the sailing will be at Weymouth. So think about the volume of souvenirs that will be sold and shipped parcel post.
The Olympic Games bonanza has only just started and the business will grow over the next sixteen months until it peaks when the Games start. The Royal Wedding has curbed the hype a little of late but this is now likely to change with the allocation of tickets and the performance trials at all the major venues all happening in the next few months.
The Olympic gift business has been fully established and that will take off over the next few months. The London Olympic Games Official Committee are forecasting a multi million pound business and it may go as high as a billion, with a great deal of it coming from mail order parcels from the Internet trade.
This will mean a large increase in the parcel delivery business, both to the official Olympic outlets and also to the Internet carriers. Strangely whilst the Royal Wedding eclipsed the Olympics for a few weeks and is likely to do so for a few weeks more the success of a major British event organised with superb efficiency and a sense of enjoyment is likely to rub off on the interest of the Games as overseas people now have a sense that London is a great place to visit and this event may be something very special.
There is obviously a very specific souvenir market as well as the general public market in that every major sporting association from every country competing and a few that are not, will want special souvenirs as will all the local governments, councils and sponsors of the Games from around the World. Most of these souvenirs are likely to be bought online and sent by parcel post.
The souvenir market ranges across the most amazing set of products from the baseball caps and mugs to the most expensive of jewellery. The Royal Mint is putting out a set of coins, and the clothing industry will get a great boost as the Games get near. This type of merchandise will become popular next Christmas as it will be topical and something different and there is something for every age group. The parcel trade should get it fair share of worldwide trade, it’s a one-off business but worth the effort.
Many Internet souvenir sellers may well end up shipping parcels out as fast as they can.
